2013 Topps Archives - Pele

2013 Topps Archives Baseball (1975 throwback)
Pele autographed card
Odds: 1:41,000 packs

Came across information about this card while researching the new Topps MLS cards.
In one chat room there was a question of how come Pele gets put in a baseball set, but not the soccer set. I agree I would love to see the older NASL players autographs inserted into the MLS set.

However Topps' primary sets are baseball, and the 2013 Archive set not only includes Pele, but include heavy metal rock stars like Sebastian Bach, tommy Lee, Lita Ford and Dee Snider; actors Jack Palance, Ava Gardner as well as the usual baseball players. The set utilizes all throwback designs another popular trend from Topps

Pele - bicycle kick

Pele's iconic bicycle kick in Morumbi Stadium, Sao Paulo, Brazil.
The 2006 documentary and companion book "Once in a Lifetime" about the Cosmos soccer club featured the Pele bicycle kick under the heading "Goals, Greed, Girls". Telling the story of the NY Cosmos, founded in 1971 and dissolved in 1985, and how they brought soccer to the USA through the heroics of it's international stars, Pele, Giorgio Chingalia, Franz Beckenbauer, Carlos Alberto.  although his silhouette is on the poster, Pele declined to be interviewed for the documentary.
Pearl Jam 20th Anniversary poster - for the Pearl Jam Twenty Tour (PJ20). Pearl Jam played in Morumbi Stadium, Sao Paulo, Brazil in November 2011.  Ames Bros. utilized the Pele kick as the focus of the pearl Jam poster. The poster also was available in a gold print variation.
Pele reproduced his famous kick in the movie Escape to Victory (Victory in North America), the story of an Allied prisoner of war soccer team playing against an elite German team in a German propaganda stunt. The Allied team would consist of Pele, Bobby Moore, Michael Caine, Sylvester Stallone, Osvaldo Ardiles, Kazimierz Deyna, Paul Van Himst, Mike Summerbee, John Wark, Hallvar Thoresen, along with several members of the Ipswich Town F.C.

Werner Roth portrayed the German team Captain and Max von Sydow the prison commandant. The movie was based on the 1962 Hungarian movie "Two Half Times in Hell" directed by Zoltan Fabri

Article - Yes Soccer is Americas Game by Bill Soporito
Please stop lecturing us. We know it's called football everywhere else and it's the global game, the beautiful game. Americans call it soccer because there's a perfectly great sport here already called football, one that is not inclined to surrender its moniker anytie soon. So don't get your football knickers in a twist about it.

Soccer it is.

2007 - NJ Ironmen

2007.12.01 Prudential Center, Newark, NJ
Inaugural game of the New Jersey Ironmen v Detroit Ignition...
The local draw to the game was the addition of Tony Meola, in goal for the Ironmen. Daniel Antoniuk connect for a hat-trick in the inaugural game victory for the Ironmen over the Ignition 8-6.

Pele was named honorary captain for the opening game...the game program had this, written by John Archibald..barely 30 years after playing that last game at the Meadowlands, Pele has returned to the Garden State. The man known as the greatest soccer legend of all-time will soon carry us into the next generation of New Jersey sports, just as he was carried around Giants Stadium that rainy day in 1977. while the rooftop of Prudential Center may prevent the sky from dropping tears of joy upon our heads, there will undoubtedly be a need for tissues when the legend of Pele is in our presence. the roof may block the night sky, but that's alright. The brightest star in the sky will be right in front of our eyes.

The field was packed with children lined up around the center circle. Pele walked onto the field into the center of the circle for the first kick and presentations. then the children, who never saw Pele play converged on the man. He touched them on the head, shook their hands and smiled. Drawn like a magnet the children would not leave the field. Announcement were made and the mass of children moved with Pele like a game of magnet ball.

When the field finally cleared, and Pele had departed, we waited for the game to start. The players did not take the field. We waited, an announcement was made that the players will soon take the field and start the game. We later learned that the players were still in the locker room getting autographs and shaking hands with Pele, meeting their hero just as the children on the field had done...

Hand painted first day cover for the 1980 Olympics

1979 the US Postal Service issued a series of stamps in commemoration of the upcoming 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow. due to the inability of the USPS and the ICO to come to a licensing agreement none of the US stamps were allowed to show the Olympic rings. Therefore the USPS replaced the rings with 5 stars in each design.
