World Cup USA94 - Hard Rock Cafe

I found this button on-line....The Hard Rock Cafe produces pins from each of it's locations all over the world and their pins are highly collected like Olympic and Disney pins. Usually the pins are cloisonne with the occasional celluloid button.

Above is a 1.5inch celluloid button from Orlando, Fla commemorating the World Cup USA94. I have seen a similar button issued from Los Angeles with a blue background, but have not located any others....

1996 - Metrostars v Tampa Bay Mutiny

1996.05.04 - Giants Stadium - MetroStars v Tampa Bay Mutiny

In the fifth game of the inaugural season, the Metrostars dominated play in the first half, before a crowd of 38,621, but were trailing 3-0, thanks to an 8 minute span early in the second half when they were blitzed by 2 Diego Viera goals sandwiched around a successful penalty kick by Carlos Valderrama.

The Metrostars were able to make a comeback in a 3-minute span as they tied the game on an own-gaol and 2 goals by Giovanni Savarese, his second goal on a bicycle kick from 8-yards out...

The Metrostars won the shoot-out 2-1 on goals by Tab Ramos and Dario Hernandez...

Metrostars - Christmas 1996

1996 the Metrostars issued a booklet of Christmas postcards. The 6 card fold-out featured 5 player cards, although the players are unrecognizable, Donadoni is highly visible by his jersey. Others may be Anthony De Avila, Rhett Harty (#15), Giovanni Savarese (17) and Peter Vermes.

A 6th card featured the Metrostars logo during a snowfall. The front inside of the booklet said "Happy Holidays from the Metrostars" with the Metros cab logo. The backs of the cards were typical postcard style backs with a place for postage, address and message.

Upper Deck produced several sets in commemoration of the 1994 World Cup.

the 1993 World Cup Preview set features many of the US team members, along with 15 US Cup 93 review cards...There were a total of 165 cards in the US market English/Spanish issue.

Other preview sets, 200 base cards) were issued in English/German, Italian/Spanish, all of which focused on the international players with the US players in the mix.

These sets also featured Future Stars, Bora's Select (10 cards) and World Star Holograms (9 cards), Honorary Captains - Reggie Jackson, Joe Montana, Michael Jordan, Wayne Gretzky.

Future Stars were only placed in special promotion was packs..20 From the Sidelines cards (#145-165) featuring the US team members...

Upper Deck also produced special sets with the same format, 1993 Mastercard Soccer Locker set, US and Mexico boxed sets

Giogorio Chinaglia

Giorgio Chinaglia - NY Cosmos by Bruce Stark of the NY Daily News....Chinaglia came to the NY Cosmos in 1976 after having played for Swansea in England and Massese, Internapoli and SS lazio in Italy. Playing along side soccer greats Pele and Franz Beckenbauer, Chinaglia would win 4 NASL titles and score 243 goals, from 1976-1983.

Chinaglia also played for the Italian National team competing in the 1974 World Cup

Bruce Stark was a staff artist with the NY Daily News from 1960-1982 specializing in sports cartoons and caricatures. Stark won the National Cartoonist's Rueben Award for "Best Sports Cartoonist of the Year" in 1966 and 1975, and "Best Special Features Cartoonist" 1968.

Star had provided drawings of members of the NY Yankees and NY Mets which ran in the color comics pages during the late 1970s. The following year Stark and the Daily News again provided caricatures of sports celebrities: Giorgio Chinaglia - NY Cosmos, Ron Guidry - NY Yankees, Lee Mazzilli - NY Mets, Harry Carson - NY Giants, richard Todd - NY Mets, and Tennis player Tracy Austin. The pages are 9 x 12" printed on news stock.

Mutts soccer

2003 Patrick McDonnell, artist for the comic strip Mutts, appeared at Buchmeister Books, Chatham, NJ to sign copies of his books and to support the North Shore Animal League, (McDonnell is involved with The Humane Society of the United States). McDonnell has been awarded the National Cartoonist Society's Reuben for Cartoonist of the Year 1999, Comic Strip of the Year 1996; Germany's Max and Moritz Award for Best international Comic Strip 1998; Harvey Award for Best Comic Strip 1997, 1999, 2001, 2002, 2003 among others...

Mutts first appeared in 1994 and is based on the every day antics of Earl, the dog, and Mooch, the cat, and their human owners. Their friendship shows the differences between the animals as pets and their relationships with their owners...Mutts has seen publication in several books...

Signing his book - Mutts - What Now...for my sons Mike and Matt, McDonnell noticed they were wearing soccer shirts. He said he had never drawn Earl or Mooch playing soccer and this would be the first time. Since I read the comic strip everyday, I have seen Earl play baseball, but have yet to see them play soccer outside of this drawing.

1996 Olympic - Half Dollar

The 1996 Olympic Soccer half dollar coin was one of four different commemorative half dollar coins issued for the Atlanta Olympic summer games.

The obverse of the coin was designed by Clint Hansen and features two women playing soccer, while the reverse design features the Olympic flame and logo of the Atlanta games.

Although authorized to mint 3,000,000 coins, only 165,000 coins were sold in the proof and uncirculated versions. The large number of coins produced by the US for the Olympics discouraged collectors. The lower sales figures worked in favor of those collectors who purchased the coins, as they carry higher premiums on the collectors market.

Other coins issued by the US Mint for the 1996 Olympic Games in 1996 were the: Olympic Cauldron five-dollar gold, Olympic flag bearer five-dollar gold, Olympic high jump silver dollar, Olympic rowing silver dollar, Paralympics wheelchair silver dollar, Olympic tennis silver dollar, Olympic swimming silver half dollar.

In 1995 the US mint had also issued the: Olympic stadium five dollar gold, Olympic torch runner five dollar gold, Olympic cycling silver dollar, Olympic track and field silver dollar, Paralympics blind runner silver dollar, Olympic gymnast silver dollar, Olympic baseball half dollar, and the Olympic basketball half dollar.

Sonny Carter - Soccer to Space

Manley Lanier "Sonny" Carter, Jr. (August 15, 1947–April 5, 1991) was an American physician, professional soccer player, Naval officer, and NASA astronaut who flew on STS-33. He was scheduled to fly on STS-42 at the time of his death in the crash of Atlantic Southeast Airlines Flight 2311 in Brunswick, Georgia while on a commercial airplane traveling for NASA.

He received a bachelor of arts degree in chemistry from Emory University, in 1969 and a doctor of medicine degree from there in 1973. After completing medical school in 1973, Carter completed internship in internal medicine at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta. In 1974, he entered the Navy and completed flight surgeon school.

Carter played collegiate soccer and ran track at Emory university. His senior season, he was captain and most valuable player on the soccer team. In 1970, Carter signed with the Atlanta Chiefs of the North American Soccer League, for whom he played three seasons.

Walter Bahr - Chris Bahr

Walter Bahr 1948-1957 US National team, team captain, member of the 1950 US National team that played in the 1950 World Cup competition. Bahr played for the Philadelphia National of the American Soccer League, as an amateur. Competed in the 1948 Olympics.

In the 1950 World Cup, the US National team defeated England 1-0 in one of the greatest upset in sports. June 29, 1950, Brazil...The Americans had lost their last 7 international matches before facing the English squad. In the first half, against a strong English team the US scored in the 37th minute..Bahr took a long shot, as English keeper Bert Williams went to his right to make a play on the bal. Joe Gaetjens dove headlong and grazed the ball enough to to place it to the left of the diving keeper for the score.

With the momentum of the goal the Americans kept up their game matching the superior english squad. The game would end in a stunning US victory.

Bahr had three sons, Casey, Chris and Matt who all played professionally in the North American Soccer League, were members of the US Olympic team and played in the National Football League

Chris Bahr was a placekicker in the National Football League and played midfielder in the North American Soccer League.

Bahr was a first round draft pick of the Philadelphia Atoms in the 1975 North American Soccer League draft. As a rookie midfielder, he made an immediate impression, tying an NASL scoring record for goals by a native-born American by netting 11, including two 2-goal games and four game winners. Bahr also netted the first sudden death goal in Atoms history against the New York Cosmos in front of 20,124 at Veterans Stadium. He was named the 1975 NASL Rookie of the Year. Bahr played 22 games for the Atoms, scoring 11 goals before departing for the NFL.

Bahr also was a member of the 1976 U.S. National Team. He scored both goals for the United States in their 2-0 shutout of Bermuda in the qualifying rounds for the XXI Olympic Games in Montreal, Canada.

Bahr attended Penn State, where he was named an All-American three times for soccer and once for football.

Women's World Cup 1999

Opening day commemorative cover for the Women's World Cup, June 19, 1999 Giants Stadium East rutherford, NJ...signed by Brandi Chastain, US National Team 1988-2004,California Storm (WPSL), San Jose CyberRays (WUSA), FC Gold Pride (WPS). Chastain has made 192 appearances for the US National team.

On July 10, 1999 at the Women's World Cup at the Rose Bowl, Pasadena..Chastain scored the fifth kick in the penalty shootout to give the US the win over China in the final game...after both teams failed to score during regulation play.

Women's World Cup 1999

I had found the World Cup in 1994 to be exciting and expected the Women's World Cup to offer just as much fun...I was not disappointed.

I attended the opening day at Giants Stadium, with a crowd of 78,972, for a double-header USA v Denmark and Brazil v Mexico...Mia Hamm's response to the day was "The crowd was awesome, the noise was unbelievable.."

For the US Mia Hamm would score in the 17th minute, followed by Julie Foudy and Kristine Lilly for a 3-0 victory...

Pretinha and Sissi each scored 3 goals to lead Brazil over Mexico 7-1...

Just as with the Men's World Cup in 1994, games were played all over the US...Giants Stadium, NJ; Soldier Field, Chicago, Il; Foxboro Stadium, Mass; Stanford Stadium, Palo Alto, Ca; Rose Bowl, Pasadena, Ca.; Civic Stadium, Portland, Or; Spartan Stadium, San Jose, Ca.; Cooke Stadium, Landover, Md.
